Campfire is a blend of smoky Scotch, bourbon and rye whisky. In addition, High West produces a whisky called “Campfire”. The second Rye, sourced from MGP of Indiana, is a 95% Rye with 5% malted barley mix. One Rye from their own distillery comprised of 80% rye and 20% malted barley. The Double Rye consists of a blend of two Straight Rye whiskies between two and seven years of age. The current portfolio consists of the American Prairie Bourbon, a Blend of Straight Bourbons. Prior to 2018 none of the whisky in High West whiskies were produced by High West themselves. The distillery has a wide range of aromas from sweet, vanilla and delicately spicy, to strong and strong spicy with aromas such as cloves, cinnamon and black pepper. High West currently manufactures Bourbon and Rye Whisky. The High West Distillery was founded in 2006 by David Perkins and his wife Jane. High West also boasts that it is the only distillery that can be reached on skis. The High West whiskies, named after the location of the distillery at 2,133m above sea level on the Wasatch Range in the Rocky Mountains. The distillery produces Bourbon and Rye Whisky. It is the first whisky distillery in Utah since 1870. I suggest putting together a flight of the classic mash bills from MGP, both bourbon and rye, along with a smoky Scotch to taste next to the High West Campfire.High West is an American whisky brand and distillery in the west of the US, in Utah. Because it is like nothing else on the market, I tend to think of the Campfire as a gateway. Despite the odd combination, the blending of the High West Campfire is an art. High West sources the bourbon and rye from MGP, but they remain hush-hush about their whisky source. Bourbon, rye, and peated Scotch are stand-alone whiskeys for most people, but after having dessert at the Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay, David Perkins was inspired. So what makes the High West Campfire so unique? It is an amalgamation of three types of whiskeys that you wouldn’t think would be tastily blended. The first of the donations this year are going to the Wildland Firefighters Foundation, Protect Our Winters, and American Prairie. A $1 million commitment over the course of three years will go to foundations aligned with their initiative. Destroying fragile ecosystems and landscapes, High West is releasing Campfire in honor of their Protect the West campaign. The wildfires in the West have no doubt been out of control in recent years.
